Periodontal Treatment in Houston, TX

Periodontal diseases, otherwise known as gum diseases, are infections that affect the gums. Left untreated, the infection can gradually destroy the support of your natural teeth.

What Causes Periodontal Disease?

Gum disease is caused by the buildup of plaque—a colorless film of bacteria that sticks to your teeth; plaque is attracted to the sugars and food particles that are left behind from the food that you eat. The bacteria produce a by-product of toxins that irritate the gums, which leads to redness, swelling, and bleeding. If proper care and treatment do not take place after these early signs of gum disease appear, then the damage will progress to more advanced symptoms like gum tissue recession.

Stages of Periodontal Disease

There are different stages of periodontal disease, based on its advancement from initial inflammation to severe bone loss that ultimately leads to tooth loss:
  • Gingivitis
  • Early periodontitis
  • Moderate periodontitis
  • Advanced periodontitis

Treatment for Periodontal Disease

Our office offers scaling and root planing treatments to patients who are suffering from periodontal disease. Scaling and root planing is essentially a more thorough, deep cleaning, performed to stop the progression of periodontal disease. The first part, scaling, eliminates bacteria, tartar, and other debris from beneath the gum line near the roots. Root planing involves smoothing the surface of the roots to help remove plaque from the areas where the tooth is rough.

Preventing Periodontal Disease

More adults over the age of 35 lose teeth due to gum disease than from cavities. The best way to prevent gum disease is to practice good brushing and flossing habits daily, maintain a balanced diet, and visit our office at least twice a year for regular cleanings.
